Artists Toolkit: Life Drawing

I must say, I really enjoy doing the long drawing, this last one was 45 minutes, I took my time and tried to make sure every line was correct, I feel I am improving better with these long images than the quick ones. :) I was also advised to try doing heads, as I leave them out, or just indicate where the chin is, but on the quick three minute drawings and the long drawing I decided to give it a go, I do think it looks better with a head.

Artist toolkit: Life Drawing week 5

This week we done a variety of light and dark drawings with black and white paper, I chose to use a white pencil and white chalk on my image. It took me a while to remind myself that I wasn't drawing the image, just the lighting, so I kept restarting on the same piece of paper, I think my most successful was the face and the foot. This task was 20 minutes,

These were 3 minute poses, we could chose what paper we wanted, I chose to do the light on black paper again but doing quicker strokes. I done this so that it would help me understand which line would benefit most drawn in the chalk to give the impression of what it was.

Finally I went onto white paper in which we had to draw the life model, Alan, coming up from the floor and moving towards us, I found this challenging to do in the time limit, 3 minutes per piece, as as Alan got closer, I could see more detail in each line and this was harder to incorporate in such a small amount of time. But i found this to be my most successful piece today.

Artist Toolkit: Life Drawing week 4

In this life drawing lesson, I decided to focus one the hands. These 3 minute drawings all started by drawing the hand first and going on from there. I enjoyed this method as I usually start from the shoulders and I found I was drawing more from habit/memory than observation, so by changing my starting point I felt I had to draw with more concentration.

The next images were done by rotation, the life model, Francise, moved slightly between each drawing so we could understand where each element goes when he moves from left to right or from a ball to standing up.

Lastly, we were given the choice to focus on anything for 20 minutes, I chose to do a time allowance of my own, I concentrated on the hands and gave myself different time slots to draw the hands. I started with 30 seconds:

Then 1 minute:

2 Minutes:

5 Minutes:

10 Minutes:

From this lesson I have learned not to use a 4H pencil... please excuse the poor quality pictures. I have also learned I enjoy drawing from the hands.
